Description

The life-size sculpture honors Sergeant Alvin York of Tennessee who became the most decorated American soldier of the First World War. He stands aiming his rifle and attired in a combat uniform with canteen. The statue is carved in granite and was sculpted by Felix de Weldon. On the base of the memorial is sculpted a description of York’s most famous action in which he “silenced a battalion of 35 German machine guns, killing 25 enemy soldiers and capturing 132 in the Argonne Forest on October 8, 1918.”
