West Point USMA Civil War Memorial

Dublin Core

Description

This large and elegant memorial at the junction of Thayer and Cullum Roads honors the 2,240 officers and men who were killed during the Civil War (or the War of the Rebellion as the memorial names it). The memorial was designed by Stanford White. The memorial is dominated by a large pink granite column topped by a bronze angel with her wings spread blowing a horn and holding a laurel wreath. The base sits in a round courtyard which is surrounded by 8 large pink granite balls which are each flanked by two cannons whose barrel ends are inscribed with the names of key battle victories of the war. The names of the officers are inscribed on plaques on the round base of the column while the names of the enlisted men are inscribed in bronze bans around the large granite balls. The impressive memorial looks out over the Hudson River.
