John Ericson US Civil War Washington DC

Dublin Core

Description

John Ericson, an immigrant from Scandinavia, designed the iron-clad vessel Monitor that would participate in an historical naval battle in 1862 as the first class of iron-clad vessels in history. Ericson would go on to design many more iron-clad vessels for the Union and would work in naval engineering after the war. The Memorial is located near the Lincoln Memorial and Potomac River and was pushed by the Scandinavian Alliance. The Memorial depicts a contemplative Ericson with a woman figure representing Vision, an American ironworker representing labor and a Viking warrior as a representation of Adventure. Behind them all is a Tree of Life symbol which is important in Norse mythology. All of these symbols combine Ericson's birthplace with this adopted home.
