Zivy Crater CWGC WWI Cemetery France
Dublin Core
Description
This mine crater grave has no headstones and the Cross of Sacrifice sits on a ledge overlooking the sunken burial ground. This is in one of only 2 such mine craters used as cemeteries and is basically a mass grave. It was started by Canadian Corp Burial officers during the fighting for Vimy Ridge in 1917. Etched under the cross it states the names of those buried here who are known; there are 53 individuals interred here and 5 are unknown. They include 48 Canadians whose names are inscribed on the low walls, 2 unidentified Canadians and 3 unidentified soldiers of the British Empire.
