An account of the resource
An obelisk atop the original German bunker fortification on Utah beach honors those of the 1st Engineer Special Brigade who gave their lives in the initial landings at Utah Beach and liberated Sainte Marie du Mont. On the front side is also the Seadragon emblem in red. On the other 3 sides of the obelisk are listed the specific sub-units of Assault Force U of the Western Naval Task Force who were part of the landings on the Normandy Beaches on the morning of June 6, 1944. The obelisk sits on a raised platform; on the side facing the water is a small naval gun and then a low wall on which are individual plaques that indicate the approximate location of ships and units offshore. The raised ground overlooks Utah Beach. The memorial sits atop the German defensive bunker that the Brigade took during the assault and used as its headquarters.

This simple but elegant polished black marble marker that tapers to a point at the top honors the 825 men of the 22nd Infantry Regiment who were lost in fighting in Vietnam. On the top of the marker is inscribed the colorful unit insignia with a map of Vietnam inscribed below it. At the bottom is inscribed the dedication to those who lost their lives. On the back of the memorial are the list of unit awards/citations received as well as the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the unit patches.

This gray granite marker honors the 29th Infantry Division for its service during World War II. On the top of the marker is the unit insignia with the words “29 Lets Go”. Inscribed on the memorial is the dedication to the 29th that stormed ashore on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 in France and suffered severe casualties. It states that “Our Comrades Lie in Distant Fields. They Gave the Last Full Measure of Their Devotion, Sleep, Comrades, Forever Young. We Salute You. Remember Us.” On the reverse side is inscribed the battles/campaigns in which the 29th participated, the unit awards received including 5 Presidential Unit Citations and battle casualties – 20,327 killed, wounded and missing.

This granite obelisk was raised on the 50th anniversary of the June 6, 1944 landings to honor all those who landed on Omaha Beach that day and especially those who gave their. A beautiful engraved inscription honoring those who were lost is on the front in both English and French; on the sides are listed specific battalions, units and platoons which comprised the division on that day. On the back of the obelisk are inscribed the campaigns in which the 29th participated as well as the number of casualties the unit sustained.
