Description
An account of the resource
This very impressive memorial to all South African troops who served on all fronts in the war (including fighting in southwest Africa) is set back from the road and can easily be missed. As you peer through the opening in the forest, there is a low wall of stone with an arch flanked by South African and French flags and atop the arch is a bronze statue of two men controlling the reins of a horse. In front of the arch is an alter which was placed here in 1952 to honor South Africans who gave their lives in both World War I and II. Once you pass through the arch set even further back – actually into Delville Wood – is the South African Museum which is quite stunning and constructed of stone and etched glass and in the shape of a star-fortress. The museum was dedicated in 1984. Within the museum are a variety of displays that depict the history of South Africa and the sacrifices of its people including native forces. Large bas relief sculptures depict important scenes in South African military history. The museum surrounds an open courtyard in which sits a memorial cross; all of the walls into the courtyard are etched glass.
