Description
An account of the resource
The first memorial on the National Mall that honors the military service of women is part of the monument to the Vietnam War. Over 11,000 women served in Vietnam during the war; most served as nurses but others also served in intelligence, clerical, photojournalism, and transport duty. This memorial was added after the work of women veterans brought needed attention to this oversight. The sculpture shows three women helping a wounded soldier. There are 8 trees planted around the Memorial site to remember the 8 women nurses -- 7 Army and 1 Air Force -- who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war.

Description
An account of the resource
This large white stone monument topped by a figure of woman with her head bowed honors the 22 women killed when the Washington Arsenal exploded on June 17, 1864. The Arsenal sat in what today is the Navy Yard. Sparks from a nearby explosion set off the large explosion in the arsenal that killed the women. Sixteen are buried here together although 8 were never identified; two more ladies are buried in family plots within the cemetery. The funeral procession in the capitol was massive and heady by President Lincoln and Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of War.

Description
An account of the resource
McAllen, Texas is the home of a new very large war memorial to honor all those who have served in America’s wars of the 20th and 21st century. The memorial continues to grow and will eventually have a large center star-shaped building that rises to the “American Spire of Honor”. Currently there are a number of courtyards composed many polished black granite memorials that tell the stories of the wars from World War I to the present and provide a list of names of those from Texas who gave their lives. There are also two special sections that honor those Texans who have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and a special focus on Hispanics who have been awarded the Medal of Honor. There are also individual memorials honoring Women in the Service and particular units. The entire circular complex is surrounded by American flags on pedestals that are donated by groups or individuals to honor specific individuals or units.
