Description
An account of the resource
The first memorial on the National Mall that honors the military service of women is part of the monument to the Vietnam War. Over 11,000 women served in Vietnam during the war; most served as nurses but others also served in intelligence, clerical, photojournalism, and transport duty. This memorial was added after the work of women veterans brought needed attention to this oversight. The sculpture shows three women helping a wounded soldier. There are 8 trees planted around the Memorial site to remember the 8 women nurses -- 7 Army and 1 Air Force -- who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war.

Description
An account of the resource
This iconic memorial on the National Mall honors and remembers those who fought in and especially those who were lost in the US's most divisive conflict -- the Vietnam War. The simple design by young Yale student Maya Lin focuses upon the individual names of the 58,000 lost. The highly polished black granite walls are inscribed with the names in chronological order and radiate out towards the Lincoln and Washington Monuments. The names begin in the center at the highest point. The design met with some criticism and thus both a flag and statue of soldiers was added to the site. The panels reflect the visitor and bring the focus upon the names of those lost in the conflict. Today the site is one of the most visited sites on the National Mall and the many mementos left at the Memorial by visitors have spawned the creation of a Museum to display them. A womens memorial has also been added nearby to show the role women played in the conflict.

Description
An account of the resource
World War I brought massive loss of life and many service member's remains were unidentifiable and thus placed in graves designated as unknown. After the creation of Tombs of the Unknown in Great Britain and France, Congress authorized a national memorial for these unknown soldiers in 1921. Four unknown soldier remains were disinterred and one of them was chosen by a World War I veteran US Army Sgt Edward Younger; this special casket was brought back and buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in a special marble tomb. The crypt bears the inscription "Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God". With the rise of tourists, since 1937 the US Army has maintained a 24/7 guard which became the responsibility of the 3rd Infantry Division or "Old Guard." After both World War II and the Korean War additional unknown remains were added in adjacent crypts in 1958. In the 1980s amidst controversy, a Vietnam War service person's remains was added, but subsequent pressure by family members and veterans and DNA testing verified the remains as those of Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie in 1998. His family requested his reburial at the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks Missouri. The Vietnam War Tomb of the Unknown has never been filled and instead was rededicated as a memorial to all service person's from 1958-1975 who are still missing.

Description
An account of the resource
This striking memorial on the National Mall stands out with its steel larger-than-life statues of Korean servicemen wearing ponchos that appear to be blowing in the wind. The statues represent 14 Army, 3 Marine, 1 Navy and 1 Air Force members and are ethnically diverse. The long mural wall is etched so that it appears three dimensional and presents scenes from the conflict and the highly polished black granite reflects the statues. The reflections appear to show 38 statues symbolic of the 38th parallel. The reflective pool at the far end of the memorial provides a quite place around the Freedom is Not Free wall that lists the casualties in the war. When lit up at night, the statues and mural wall are almost eerily lifelike.

Description
An account of the resource
Bryant This national cemetery in Raleigh is a seven-acre site enclosed within a brick wall. The cemetery was placed here by General William T. Sherman on what had been Post Green, a Union Army occupation camp. The cemetery was a burial site for various Union dead who had perished in the waning years of the war across the South and were re-interred here. There are also six group burials on the grounds that date from the Second World War; these sites are marked by square stone corner markers set into the ground and a large flat marker bears the names of those interred within the marked square. There is also one Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War, William Maud, buried here.
