Description
An account of the resource
In a plaza in Battery Park at the south end of Manhattan and facing the Statue of Liberty is the national World War II monument to those servicemen who lost their lives in combat in the Atlantic Ocean and who are missing at sea. The plaza consists of eight large granite pylons on which the names of 4,601 missing servicemen are inscribed. These pylons sit four to a side and in between is a sculpture of a large bronze eagle holding a laurel wreath over a wave. The bronze plaque on the statue indicates this Memorial honors not only the lost servicemen but also the 6, 185 Merchant Mariners and 529 members of the US Army Transport Service who were lost during the war. Commissioned by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) which oversees the Memorial, the plaza was designed by architect Paul Cret Harbeson and the statue was sculpted by Albino Manca. President John F. Kennedy dedicated the memorial on May 23, 1963
