Description
An account of the resource
This German language monument honors those German-speaking Texans who opposed slavery and sought to remain loyal to the Union during the Civil War. They hoped to link with Union troops by way of Mexico. However, their Confederate neighbors hunted them down and killed them along the Nueces River in 1862. The bodies were left unburied and the bones were gathered by their fellow German immigrant comrades and buried in this memorial in 1865 with an escort of Federal troops. The twenty foot limestone obelisk weighs over 35,000 pounds. The monument was restored and rededicated in 1996 and includes most of the original stones.

Description
An account of the resource
This granite memorial that stands at the entrance to the Uvalde Memorial Park was the original war memorial in Uvalde and was built to honor those who lost their lives in World War I. Gold Star Mothers raised the original funds and the memorial was dedicated in 1927 with a bronze plaque listing the names. Over the years additional plaques were added to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. In 2006 a new monument was created that would be more accessible and to which names from the conflicts of the 21st century could be added. The original memorial was left to remind citizens of the more than century long sacrifices made by the community to America’s wars.
