The monument is composed of a large granite pylon topped by a gilded statue of a female figure on a clam shell chariot being drawn by three seahorses; this is known as Columbia Triumphant. In front of the pylon is a group of symbolic figures representing courage and victory as well as justice. The names of those who were lost on the USS Maine are inscribed on one side of the pylon. var str = 'In Father Duffy Square in the Times Square area of Manhattan resides the beautiful bronze statue of Father France Duffy who had a long history as a military chaplain. The statue stands in front of a large granite Celtic cross and actually faces towards the priest’s old church, Holy Cross at 237 West 42nd Street. Born in Canada, Duffy moved to New York in the last 1800s and was ordained as a priest in 1898. He served as the chaplain for the Fighting 69th Infantry of the National Guard from New York where he served in first in the Spanish-American War and then a military hospital on Long Island before moving to the Bronx as a parish priest. During World War I, he returned to the 69th and served with them in Europe where he earned numerous medals including the Distinguished Service Cross, the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre. When he returned to New York after the war, he became pastor of Holy Cross. After his death in 1932, the city named the new park at this location in his honor in 1934 and the memorial, designed by Charles Keck, was dedicated in 1937. The Memorial is now in the center of a major tourist destination.';

var str = 'On February 15, 1898 the USS Maine exploded in Havana, Cuba and took the lives of 253 men (2 officers and 251 enlisted). This memorial is centered around the main mast of the Maine which is set in a very large granite circular building that represents the gun turret of the Maine. The interior is lined with marble Around this circular structure are inscribed the names of those who were lost on the Maine. Solid bronze doors provide access into the interior and on them is set 1/2 of the bell from the Maine with the inscription of the ship\'s commissioning date. An outer bronze gate adorned with 3 anchors guards the door. Beside the entrance are two large granite urns. Near the mast monument is a ship\'s anchor and several cannon captures from the Spanish. A plaque on the anchor indicates that those interned nearby were brought from their original burial site in Havana to lie together here in honor in 1899. Behind the mast monument are buried 229 members of the Maine\'s crew of which only 62 are known.';

var str = 'On the grounds of the Monroe County courthouse grounds is a very large monument topped by a Civil War soldier. The original memorial was dedicated by members of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) and dedicated to the soldiers who served in all wars from Monroe County. There are relief sculptures spaced between the flat engraved sections honoring each war. On one of the four sides is etched \"The Spanish American War 1898-1902\" but the rest of the etching has worn away. On another side one can barely read the inscription honoring those who served in World War I and the phrase seems to read \"1917-1918 For God and Country Gave Themselves That Right and Justice\". The last part is too worn away to be read. And finally is engraved Mexican War 1847. The marker dominates one corner of the grounds but the etchings have been heavily worn down.';
