var str = 'The military outpost at Fort Stanton was built to protect the western frontier in the late 1800s but was turned into a hospital for tuberculosis patients for the US Merchant Marine in 1899. During World War II it also held German POWs. Many of those buried in the cemetery are members of the Merchant Marine as well as several POWs. In 2017 the site also was designated a State Veterans Cemetery which has led to added amenities and upkeep.';
