Description
An account of the resource
The museum began in 1969 at Kirtland Air Force Base as a means to preserve the history and beginnings of the Atomic Age and nuclear weapons. With heightened security after 9-11, the museum became inaccessible on the base and was moved to a new location in Albuquerque and has been expanded to show the past, present and future of atomic development. The museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian. In partner with the Atomic Heritage Foundation, the museum preserves the history of the Manhattan Project including a large collection of oral histories of the Project. The museum houses many atomic artifacts from medicine to weapons as well as an outdoor heritage park.

Description
An account of the resource
A German POW camp was established southeast of Roswell and prisoners often worked on local farms. In 1943 fifty POWs worked on a flood control project in Roswell along Spring Creek; they laid rocks along the banks. As part of their project the POWs constructed an Iron Cross with DKG 1943 in the center as part of the pattern in the rocks. Initially, local citizens covered the symbol with concrete that has eroded over the years; the symbol is now visible and preserved.

Description
An account of the resource
In this small city park is a lovely granite memorial to those who fought and eventually surrendered in the fight for Bataan in the Philippines in World War II. Two units of Coast Artillery from New Mexico were sent to be part of this defense -- the 200th Coast Artillery REG and the 515th Coast Artillery REG. The men of these units ultimately had to surrender and were part of the infamous Bataan Death March into captivity. They spent more than 3 years in captivity and many did not survive. Their units and individual names are inscribed on the monuments in this park. The park was first dedicated as a living memorial to these men in 1943 and in 1960 the original unit monument was dedicated. In 2002 the monument was greatly enlarged.
