Description
An account of the resource
Fort Leavenworth is one of the oldest and most important US Army outposts in the west and thus has a long tradition dating back to the 1820s. The first burials at the fort began in 1827. In 1862 when Congress approved the creation of national cemeteries the Fort Leavenworth was one of the original 14 established and the largest in size. The cemetery contains remains from military outposts and battles from across the West as well as from battles in the Civil War. As posts across the west were closed, the remains in post cemeteries were re-interred here.

Description
An account of the resource
This beautiful memorial to the African-American soldiers who fought for the US Army within all-black units is symbolized by the Buffalo soldier cavalryman bronze statue on his horse who represents the 9th and 10th Cavalry units which were formed with African-American volunteers after the Civil War. The 10th Cavalry was formed at nearby Fort Riley. These African-American soldiers fought in the wars with Native Americans on the Plains where they received their nickname of "Buffalo Soldiers" from the Natives. These units performed magnificently and the memorial includes lists of soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor. These units and others continued their service in America's wars through World War II when the Army was integrated. There is a bronze bust and monument to Brigadier General Benjamin Grierson who commanded these units on the Plains and showed that African-American troops were integral to the US Army. The site also includes tributes to the first African-American Parachute Unit formed in World War II as well as a bronze bust of the first Four Star US African-American General Roscoe Robinson.
