Description
An account of the resource
This site on the Janiculum Hill commemorates the April-June 1849 fight by Garibaldi-led Republican forces against invading French troops. This was a defense of the young Republic which had been declared. The Roman Assembly declared a truce rather than subject the city to invasion but Garibaldi refused to accept this truce and fled the city to continue his fight. The bodies of those Romans who had died in this bloody struggle are buried together in the ossuary on the site. Their names are carved on the site.

Description
An account of the resource
This very large triple barrel arch stands next to the famous Colosseum and commemorates Emperor Constantine’s victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312. Much of the décor on the arch is actually recycled from other sites (some no longer in existence) around Rome which commemorated the great emperors Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. The faces of key figures have been re-carved to resemble Constantine. The bas-reliefs around the top of the arch depict Marcus Aurelius’ victory over the Germans. The arch is 85 feet wide and 69 feet tall.
