On the front of the shaft is a small shelf on which sits a large bronze sculpture of a winged angel holding an olive branch. The memorial explains the award and then on bronze plaques around the memorial lists those men who received the memorial in America’s wars. There is a special plaque for the Civil War. On the top of the granite pedestal are two bronze life-size figures: an African-American Civil War soldier holding an American flag in one hand and a cane in the other and a World War II African American soldier who is apparently attired in a paratrooper uniform.
