An account of the resource
Mary Ludwig Hays accompanied her husband during his time serving in the Continental Army during the Revolution and she became legendary for the help and nursing she offered to the men. During the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 she valiantly helped man the cannon after her husband was gravely wounded. George Washington personally thanked her for her efforts. She also received a military pension from the Pennsylvania. This memorial stands next to her grave in the historic “Old Graveyard” in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Description
An account of the resource
This unusual memorial consists of a round granite circle set on its edge on a rectangular base. Inscribed on the front is a holographic picture of a set of B-24 bombers. The memorial commemorates the 44th Heavy Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, U.S. Army Corps, Station 115 who were stationed at Shipdam, England from September 1942 to August 1945. On the back is inscribed the unit mascot and nickname “The Flying Eight Balls.” The names of the unit’s two Medal of Honor Recipients, Colonel Leon Johnson and Lt. Colonel Leon Vance, are also included along with the actions for which the unit received the Presidential Unit Citations – Kiel and Ploesti.
