The 10th Cavalry was formed at nearby Fort Riley. These African-American soldiers fought in the wars with Native Americans on the Plains where they received their nickname of \"Buffalo Soldiers\" from the Natives. These units performed magnificently and the memorial includes lists of soldiers who earned the Medal of Honor. These units and others continued their service in America\'s wars through World War II when the Army was integrated. There is a bronze bust and monument to Brigadier General Benjamin Grierson who commanded these units on the Plains and showed that African-American troops were integral to the US Army. The site also includes tributes to the first African-American Parachute Unit formed in World War II as well as a bronze bust of the first Four Star US African-American General Roscoe Robinson.';
