Description
An account of the resource
This beautiful memorial site honors the Army Rangers who have served the U.S. since their inception. On enters the site along a walkway lined with stones purchased to honor individual Rangers – there are no ranks on the stones just the term “Ranger” before the names. A dramatic entrance arch stands at the entry; the arch is composed of two large granite columns with the word “Ranger” as is seen on the uniform patch stretched across. On the left column is inscribed the Ranger creed and on the right column are the Standing Orders of Rogers Rangers as developed by the originator of the US Rangers, Robert Rogers, during the French and Indian War. At the end of the walkway and framed through the arch, is the focal point of the memorial site – a large Fairbairn-Sykes knife sculpture that stands on its point. The knife was standard issue to Army Rangers during World War II. There are also black marble markers that give the history of the Rangers, their units and the campaigns in which they participated as well as the names of those who were awarded the Medal of Honor.

At Fort Benning this granite memorial honors the 80th Infantry Division, also known as the “Blue Ridge Division” which was activated in both World War I and II. The unit was originally drawn mainly from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia or along the Blue Ridge mountains and thus its nickname. The memorial contains the unit insignia and motto “Only Moves Forward” and lists the campaigns, deaths and casualties suffered in both wars. After the unit was re-activated in 2001, a small inscription on the base has been added for the unit participation in the Global War on Terrorism – Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait.
