Description
An account of the resource
The cemetery began as the post cemetery for the frontier Fort Smith in the 1820s. During the Civil War the fort came under Confederate control and more than 400 Confederate soldiers were buried in the cemetery. In 1867 the cemetery was designated as one of the new national cemeteries and remained so even after the fort was closed and disbanded. Famous burials include Brigadier General William O. Darby who initiated the Army's Rangers and was killed in Italy in the last days of World War II.

Description
An account of the resource
This national cemetery sits in a very unique location inside the crater of an extinct volcano that was sacred ground to Native Hawaiians. It is often referred to as the "Punchbowl". Ideas of a cemetery at this location first arose in the 1890s but the land would not be acquired officially and a cemetery begun until after World War II as veterans and the military pushed for a permanent cemetery for many of the remains of US servicemen who had died in fighting across the islands of the South Pacific. The first interments in the cemetery were of the remains returned from Wake Island and Japanese POW camps; eventually over 13,000 casualties from World War II were buried here. Many of those buried here were also from Pearl Harbor and in 2001 the graves of 70 unknowns were replaced with markers indicating USS Arizona when it was determined they had been on the ship.

Description
An account of the resource
At the site of the most notorious US Civil War prisoner of war camp has been created a national/international museum that focuses on the plight of prisoners during war. The museum chronicles the history of POWs and the many indignities and issues they face. There are many artifacts and personal stories from those who have endured and the narratives of those many who did not survive. This is a very touching and poignant museum that covers a topic often overlooked in military history.
