var str = 'After the Civil War and the creation of Arlington National Cemetery, a bridge across the Potomac River was proposed that would symbolically reconnect the nation north and south. The Memorial Bridge was not completed until 1932 but achieved this goal as it ran from the Lincoln Memorial to the National Cemetery. The Bridge and Avenue are designed as an Avenue of Heroes and are lined with memorials to important figures and groups. On the Washington DC end of the bridge are two large figures representing Sacrifice and Valor which were sculpted by Leo Friedlander; they were originally to be in granite but because of World War II they would eventually be completed in bronze and gilded. They were cast in Italy and given as gifts to the people of the US in 1951. The Memorial Bridge and Avenue are managed by the National Park Service.';
