An account of the resource
This large granite memorial honors Benjamin Franklin Stephenson M.D. the founder of the Grand Army of the Republic which was the first veterans organization in the US. It brought together the veterans of the Union Army in the Civil War. The triangular memorial has three sides and 3 vistas. On the side facing Pennsylvania Avenue is a bronze medallion of Stephenson under sculptures of a Union soldier and sailor with the US flag which represents fraternity; the second side is a woman protecting a child and symbolizes charity and the third side is of a woman with a sword and a shield symbolizing loyalty.
