Description
An account of the resource
The massive granite sculpture of General George Meade who led the US Army to victory at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 stands today along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. The state of Pennsylvania which was Meade's home commissioned the statue to honor this often overlooked hero of the Union victory in the Civil War. The monument shows Meade among allegorical figures: military courage, energy, fame, loyalty, chivalry and progress, and war and him in his army uniform. This memorial originally stood at what was known as Union Square but was moved to storage in 1969 and not returned to the public view until 1984 in its current location.
