Description
An account of the resource
In 2004 this large Memorial opened to honor the more than 16 million Americans who served in World War II and the more than 400,000 who lost their lives. Entering the Memorial one is greeted with a series of bronze relief panels that tell the story of the war through key scenes and events. A large reflecting pool with fountain sits at the center and is surrounded by large granite columns with bronze wreaths representing each of the states and territories that were part of the nation during the war. Behind the reflecting pool is a wall with 4,048 gold stars that represent the 400,000 plus individuals who lost their lives. On each side of the memorial are victory pavilions for the War in Europe and War in the Pacific. The Memorial sits between the Lincoln and Washington Monuments and is in a low spot of the mall so that its height does not disrupt the view down the mall.

Description
An account of the resource
The first memorial on the National Mall that honors the military service of women is part of the monument to the Vietnam War. Over 11,000 women served in Vietnam during the war; most served as nurses but others also served in intelligence, clerical, photojournalism, and transport duty. This memorial was added after the work of women veterans brought needed attention to this oversight. The sculpture shows three women helping a wounded soldier. There are 8 trees planted around the Memorial site to remember the 8 women nurses -- 7 Army and 1 Air Force -- who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war.

Description
An account of the resource
This iconic memorial on the National Mall honors and remembers those who fought in and especially those who were lost in the US's most divisive conflict -- the Vietnam War. The simple design by young Yale student Maya Lin focuses upon the individual names of the 58,000 lost. The highly polished black granite walls are inscribed with the names in chronological order and radiate out towards the Lincoln and Washington Monuments. The names begin in the center at the highest point. The design met with some criticism and thus both a flag and statue of soldiers was added to the site. The panels reflect the visitor and bring the focus upon the names of those lost in the conflict. Today the site is one of the most visited sites on the National Mall and the many mementos left at the Memorial by visitors have spawned the creation of a Museum to display them. A womens memorial has also been added nearby to show the role women played in the conflict.

Description
An account of the resource
This striking memorial on the National Mall stands out with its steel larger-than-life statues of Korean servicemen wearing ponchos that appear to be blowing in the wind. The statues represent 14 Army, 3 Marine, 1 Navy and 1 Air Force members and are ethnically diverse. The long mural wall is etched so that it appears three dimensional and presents scenes from the conflict and the highly polished black granite reflects the statues. The reflections appear to show 38 statues symbolic of the 38th parallel. The reflective pool at the far end of the memorial provides a quite place around the Freedom is Not Free wall that lists the casualties in the war. When lit up at night, the statues and mural wall are almost eerily lifelike.

Description
An account of the resource
After the Civil War and the creation of Arlington National Cemetery, a bridge across the Potomac River was proposed that would symbolically reconnect the nation north and south. The Memorial Bridge was not completed until 1932 but achieved this goal as it ran from the Lincoln Memorial to the National Cemetery. The Bridge and Avenue are designed as an Avenue of Heroes and are lined with memorials to important figures and groups. On the Washington DC end of the bridge are two large figures representing Sacrifice and Valor which were sculpted by Leo Friedlander; they were originally to be in granite but because of World War II they would eventually be completed in bronze and gilded. They were cast in Italy and given as gifts to the people of the US in 1951. The Memorial Bridge and Avenue are managed by the National Park Service.

Description
An account of the resource
The massive granite sculpture of General George Meade who led the US Army to victory at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 stands today along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. The state of Pennsylvania which was Meade's home commissioned the statue to honor this often overlooked hero of the Union victory in the Civil War. The monument shows Meade among allegorical figures: military courage, energy, fame, loyalty, chivalry and progress, and war and him in his army uniform. This memorial originally stood at what was known as Union Square but was moved to storage in 1969 and not returned to the public view until 1984 in its current location.

An account of the resource
This large white stone monument topped by a figure of woman with her head bowed honors the 22 women killed when the Washington Arsenal exploded on June 17, 1864. The Arsenal sat in what today is the Navy Yard. Sparks from a nearby explosion set off the large explosion in the arsenal that killed the women. Sixteen are buried here together although 8 were never identified; two more ladies are buried in family plots within the cemetery. The funeral procession in the capitol was massive and heady by President Lincoln and Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of War.
