After serving two term as President, he retired to New York and died in 1885. People from all over the world contributed to the public fundraiser and more than 1 million people attended the dedication on April 2, 1897. Above the entrance to the mausoleum is a granite inscription “Let Us Have Peace”. The National Memorial stands at 150 feet high at the top of the domed ceiling.
