In the courtyard outside the US Submarine Force Museum sits the memorial that commemorates the submarines and crews of the fleet nuclear ballistic missile force. These subs are referred to as FBM's (fleet ballistic missile) or SSBNs and are the naval portion of the US nuclear force as they can launch missiles with nuclear warheads.

The USS Nautilus was the first nuclear-powered submarine in history when it launched in 1954 during the Cold War. The submarine, without its power plant, is moored here a part of the National Submarine Force Museum in Connecticut.
