Description
An account of the resource
Within the Invalides lies the tomb of the victorious commander of Allied forces on the Western Front in World War I, French Marshal Ferdinand Foch. The Invalides is the final resting place of the great Heroes of France. At the center of the sacred site, is the tomb of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Marshall Foch's tomb is located in one of the major alcoves that radiate from the center; his tomb is marked by a beautiful sculpture. French World War I era soldiers carry a simple coffin. The dark but simple sculpture reflects the Foch's nature and lack of desire for notoriety.

Description
An account of the resource
The beautiful white travertine Catholic basilica on the hills of Montmatre in Paris was inspired by desire to honor the more than 58,000 Frenchmen who lost their lives during the civil uprising in Paris at the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1873. When the French Assembly approved the building of the basilica in 1874, however, part of the reason was to celebrate the victory over the communards of Paris who had slain the archbishop of Paris during the fighting. Many of the communards remain entombed in the ground underneath the basilica in the gypsum mines; the French Army of Versailles used explosives to destroy the underground chambers where they had sought refuge. The next archbishop is said to have climbed the butte of Montmartre and had a vision that on this beautiful high spot overlooking Paris a church of the Sacred Heart should be built; the basilica became a symbol of the resurgent Catholic Church in France. The view from the Basilica which sits on the highest ground in Paris is spectacular.

Description
An account of the resource
This victory column along the banks of the Seine in Paris resembles the more famous Trajan's Column in Rome. At the base of the column are four sphinxes that form a fountain from which water pours. The column sits on a pedestal carved with the symbols of Napoleonic France including an eagle. The column is divided into sections around which are listed in gilded letters the names of key battles in which Napoleon was victorious. The column is topped by a gilded female statue with the the head of the crowned and winged Emperor Napoleon with his crown of laurel leaves and in his hands he holds laurel wreaths. The memorial is in the Place du Châtelet and is the largest of the Napoleonic fountains still in existence.

Description
An account of the resource
Under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris lies the French Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This somber site is a flat tomb with a perpetual flame. This most sacred site in France honors the millions of French soldiers whose final resting place is not known and was created after World War I. The tomb lies flat in the pavement and is outlined with copper bricks and low chain border. It is surrounded by the court of honor of the Arc and its symbolic remembrance of France's triumphs in wartime. The Arc and Tomb sit in the middle of the round-about of the Champs Elysee in central Paris and are accessible from an underground walkway on the nearby sidewalk. This area is the site of many French ceremonies to honor those who have served their country.

Description
An account of the resource
This stark contemporary memorial in Paris resides along the Seine River walkway between Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. It rises from the sidewalk with thin, colored, vertically scrolling signs that list names of those who gave their lives in the fighting in North Africa during the French colonial struggle to try and maintain control of Algeria and Tunis in the 1950s. Directly in front of the light bars is a rectangular space filled only with dirt; there is absolutely no vegetation around the memorial just sand. The lack of greenery may be due to recent construction or part of the contemporary starkness of the memorial. There is also a small marker with a plaque that honors the civilians killed in a massacre in 1962.

Description
An account of the resource
This large single arch in the middle of the Champs Elysse in Paris was originally begun by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate Imperial France's victories. The inside of the arch is carved with the names of French victories from the Revolution an Napoleonic Wars and more than 500 generals. On the outer surfaces are carved reliefs of which the most famous is La Marseillaise of Francois Rude. Inside there is a staircase to the top of the memorial; inside the top of the arch is a small museum and bookstore and then a few more stairs to the terrace on the top of the arch. The view from the top of the Arc provides a magnificent view around Paris and the confluence of the six main boulevards. Underneath the Arc are bronze plaques placed into the pavement that honor all of France's conflicts from the mid-1800s to the present. And in the center of the area underneath the Arc is France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier placed here after World War I. Access to the Arc is provided by an underground walkway from the nearby sidewalks so that observers do not have to cross the very busy streets. The Arc is visible from a great distance down the streets that converge upon the round-about on which it sits. And at night it is lit up with somber amber lights.
