Description
An account of the resource
Along New York highway 29 that runs through the small villages of Greenwich and Easton, New York this small garden and memorial commemorate those boys from the area who had fought in America’s wars. I caught the beautiful flower garden out of the corner of my eye as I drove along headed to Bennington, Vermont. After pulling into a small parking lot at the rear of a doctor’s office next door, I was amazed at the quaintness and beauty of this small local memorial. The wildflowers grow high and the flagpoles draw one’s attention to the circular site surrounded by large evergreen trees. The granite marker stands tall and draws one’s eyesight as you approach. The words inscribed include a poem “Thank a Soldier” on one side and the reverse honors those who have or will serve in the armed forces from these communities. Within the circle of scenic wildflowers, however, are small bronze plaques on granite bases with the names of six local men who died serving in World War I; all but one perished in France and the last one died in Waco, Texas. The markers could almost be missed but there placement is a reminder to look beyond the beauty and find the deeper meaning.

Description
An account of the resource
This large and elegant memorial at the junction of Thayer and Cullum Roads honors the 2,240 officers and men who were killed during the Civil War (or the War of the Rebellion as the memorial names it). The memorial was designed by Stanford White. The memorial is dominated by a large pink granite column topped by a bronze angel with her wings spread blowing a horn and holding a laurel wreath. The base sits in a round courtyard which is surrounded by 8 large pink granite balls which are each flanked by two cannons whose barrel ends are inscribed with the names of key battle victories of the war. The names of the officers are inscribed on plaques on the round base of the column while the names of the enlisted men are inscribed in bronze bans around the large granite balls. The impressive memorial looks out over the Hudson River.

Description
An account of the resource
This memorial grove of trees originally included 18 memorial trees that commemorated the 16 units of the 307th INF REG 77th DIV of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. These original trees were planted in a series of ceremonies from 1920-22 and in 1926 a boulder was added to the grove of trees. The front of the boulder was inscribed with TO THE DEAD OF THE 307TH INFANTRY A ⋅ E ⋅ F, 509 OFFICERS AND MEN, 1917-1919 and on the back was a bronze plaque listing all of the Regimental Units and the names of the men. The plaque was stolen in 1997 but subsequently replaced. Some of the trees have been lost over time as well as the iron fences that encircled them originally but many of the small bronze shield plaques remain with the designated unit identified.
