At the base of the stairway up Monument Terrace in Lynchburg VA is the city’s WWI memorial that features a side view of a bronze WWI doughboy soldier who has his left arm resting on the side of a trench wall and holds his rifle in his right hand. On the stone panels around him are inscribed the names of the men from the city who lost their lives and the names of the units who participated in the conflict.

On the next landing of the Monument Terrace at Lynchburg is the World War II Memorial on both sides of the stairway. On one side there is a bronze rifle with the barrel end down and a helmet resting atop the butt. On the wall behind are carved the names of those who gave their lives in the conflict. There is also a quote from Dwight Eisenhower. On the other side of the terrace landing is another wall with more names inscribed as well as a small set-in stained glass window with the coat of arms of Company B 116th Infantry, Batteries A and B and the 246th Coast Auxiliary.

On the next landing of Lynchburg’s Monument Terrace is the city’s Korean War Memorial. A curved piled-stone wall holds bronze plaques and medallions. On individual stones are carved the names of those who were lost in the conflict. One plaque shows to soldiers huddled against the cold with a machine gun and two fallen comrades.
