Description
An account of the resource
This national cemetery sits in a very unique location inside the crater of an extinct volcano that was sacred ground to Native Hawaiians. It is often referred to as the "Punchbowl". Ideas of a cemetery at this location first arose in the 1890s but the land would not be acquired officially and a cemetery begun until after World War II as veterans and the military pushed for a permanent cemetery for many of the remains of US servicemen who had died in fighting across the islands of the South Pacific. The first interments in the cemetery were of the remains returned from Wake Island and Japanese POW camps; eventually over 13,000 casualties from World War II were buried here. Many of those buried here were also from Pearl Harbor and in 2001 the graves of 70 unknowns were replaced with markers indicating USS Arizona when it was determined they had been on the ship.

Description
An account of the resource
Within the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (also known as the Punchbowl) in Honolulu have been erected Courts of Memorial to honor all those US servicemen and women who have no known final resting place; this includes those whose remains were never recovered, those who are MIA as well as those buried or missing at sea. There are more than 28,000 names listed on the 10 large courts on each side of the stairway and the Court of Honor at the top which also includes a small chapel. Most -- more than 18,000 -- are from World War II in the Pacific (except for the southwest Pacific or Asian mainland which are commemorated at the US Cemetery at Manila, Philippines). There are also more than 8000 names from the Korean War and 2500 from the Vietnam War.

Description
An account of the resource
Inside the Hawaii Army History Museum is an entire section dedicated to the Hawaiian members of the two main Japanese-American US Army units that were formed during World War II. Despite the fact that they and their families were denied their civil rights and many were sent to "Resettlement" Campus across isolated areas of the U.S., Japanese-Americans volunteered and fought in the war. The 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team proved themselves above and beyond on the battlefield. The 442nd became the most decorated Army unit during World War II. This section of the museum tells their story and honors its members many of whom were from Hawaii. It also recognizes the 11 servicemen from Hawaii who have been awarded the U.S.'s highest medal for valor - the Medal of Honor.

These two memorials on the state capitol grounds are constructed of polished black granite stone blocks stacked into a 100 foot, curved, earthen cutout that is topped by a rock wall. Description
An account of the resource
The training ship, USS Utah, was sunk by Japanese aerial torpedoes on December 7, 1941 and was one of only 2 ships (the other being the USS Arizona) that was not raised. Unlike the Arizona, parts of the Utah remain above water. A small platform overlooking the ship’s wreckage was built in 1972 and a plaque honors the 58 men who died on the Utah including a Medal of Honor recipient.
