The USS Nautilus was the first nuclear-powered submarine in history when it launched in 1954 during the Cold War. The submarine, without its power plant, is moored here a part of the National Submarine Force Museum in Connecticut.

In the courtyard outside the US Submarine Force Museum sits the memorial that commemorates the submarines and crews of the fleet nuclear ballistic missile force. These subs are referred to as FBM's (fleet ballistic missile) or SSBNs and are the naval portion of the US nuclear force as they can launch missiles with nuclear warheads.

An account of the resource
This memorial park along the waterway in Groton honors the 52 submarines and 3600 sailors who were lost with their submarines at sea during World War II and thus have no formal burial site. The site includes a conning tower from the USS Flasher as well as a Mark IV torpedo. There is an inscribed wall of honor with the name of every sailor who was lost. In addition a low granite wall surrounding the small park is inscribed with the name of every submarine and the date it was believed lost and the how it was lost. There are also small bronze plaques with quotes from both Admirals Nimitz and Lockwood honoring the submariners.

An account of the resource
A 134 foot high memorial sits atop this hill and commemorates the battle of Fort Griswold that was attacked and burned by the British under Benedict Arnold. American reports claim the American commander surrendered the garrison and then he and 70 Americans were massacred after the surrender. The monument was erected in 1830 to commemorate the fighting here along with the Monument House which contains relics from the fort site. An inscribed plaque on the monument records the names of those lost. At the time of the author's visit the site was undergoing restoration.
