Description
An account of the resource
Located just 10 miles from Munich, Dachau was the site of the first concentration camp established by the Nazi regime in Hitler's Germany. It began in 1933 as a camp for political prisoners and those who openly opposed the regime and those deemed as "undesirable" such as Roma, homosexuals and Jehovah's Witnesses. In 1938 Jewish prisoners also began to arrive. With the outbreak of the war in 1939 the camp received the elites and governmental leaders of occupied countries as well as those who tried to form resistance movements. Dachau served as an expanding work camp for prisoners. With the initial invasion of the Soviet Union and then ultimate defeat, the camp received POWs and also Jewish prisoners and corpses from other camps. Dachau was liberated by US military forces at the end of April 1945. More than 20,000 inmates perished in the camp. The camp site became a memorial in 1965 and there are several church memorials on the site to honor the inmates who were imprisoned and died because of their various religious faiths; these include Catholics, Protestants and Jews among others.

Church
Description
An account of the resource
The 1895 church sustained extreme damage and destruction during World War II Allied bombing and was left as a reminder of the devastation of 20th century warfare. The remains of the central tower contain original mosaics and items from the church as well as a history of the church. Between 1959-61 Egon Eiermann created a blue-glazed octagonal church on one side and an hexagonal bell tower on the other side. The original church was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1891 to honor his grandfather Kaiser Wilhelm I. The original spire stood 371 feet but only 223 remain today.

Description
An account of the resource
This 69 meter tall column was erected in 1873 and originally sat in front of the Reichstag building but was moved to its current site in the Tiergarten in 1939 by the Nazi government. The memorial commemorates the Prussian victories over Denmark in 1864, Austria in 1866 and France in 1870/71; these wars created the united German Reich. The column is topped by a gold eight-meter tall statue of the Roman goddess, Victoria or Victory. On the rounded base are placed statues of Prussian general Roon and Moltke and Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. On the square base are relief sculptures depicting the battles from the wars and original cannons from the wars are also present. Inside are 285 steps in a spiral staircase leading to an observation platform. [Unfortunately when the author visited the memorial was undergoing repairs/renovations and was covered with scaffolding.

Description
An account of the resource
Erected immediately at the end of World War II in the first few months after the German surrender and dedicated on November 11, 1945, Soviet builders used materials from what had been Hitler’s Reich Chancellory building. The monument with the very large sculpture of a Soviet soldier is dedicated to the 20,000 Soviet soldiers who lost their lives in the fighting for Berlin. Up until the end of the German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) this site held a special status and was guarded 24/7 by Soviet soldiers although it was situated on the West Berlin side of the Berlin Wall. The large colonnade feature of the memorial is inscribed with the names of Soviet Army units that took part in the battle for the city as well as individual names. Two stone sarcophagi bear the names of important Soviet officers who were killed in the heavy fighting between April and May 1945. In the garden behind the memorial lie 2500 Soviet soldiers in unmarked graves. The 26 foot tall bronze Soviet soldier towers over the site and can be seen from quite a distance; he carried his gun slung over his soldier to symbolize the war was over and with this left hand points towards his fallen comrades who lie at the base in front of the memorial.

Description
An account of the resource
The German Military Cemetery at Cassino contains the remains of over 20,000 German servicemen who lost their lives in the fighting in Italy during World War II. Unlike the British and American military cemeteries, the German cemetery is maintained by a private organization, the German War Graves Commission, which finances its work mainly through the contributions of its members and donors.
The Commission was founded in 1919 at the end of World War I and established cemeteries throughout Germany. Its work was hampered during World War II as the army’s grave registration services took over the task of burying the war dead. The Commission was re-established in 1946 and in 1954 Chancellor Konrad Adenauer designated the Commission to begin searching to find and care for German military dead and cemeteries outside of German borders. The Commission arranges for young Germans and school children to visit and help maintain the sites. German soldiers also contribute to maintenance.
Through a bilateral agreement in 1955, Germany and Italy agreed that German soldiers killed in action throughout the fighting in Italy during World War II would be re-interred in a few central cemeteries. In 1964, the German cemetery in Cassino was created and over 20,000 German soldiers have been laid to rest for the final time here.
The site hardly mentions “World War II” but instead refers to the years of the fighting and contains simple cross headstones. Each gravestone holds up to 6 names and no unit identifications are included. Very few officers are included here. The site spirals up a hill to a small clearing at the top with a simple cross of iron. On the hilltop are several markers with large numbers of names inscribed and end with and to the “unknown” soldier. There is no statuary at the site. Instead of high-maintenance lawns, most of the gravesites are covered with low-maintenance ground cover plants.
