Description
An account of the resource
On top of a large stone base resides the sculpture of three Union soldiers. One stands upright holding a tattered American flag, while another kneels with his gun aimed at the enemy and the third lies resting against the 2nd with the remnants of a flag pole still in his arms. On the base front is a weathered bronze plaque stating "Sacred to the Memory of the Soldiers of Macon County and the Heroes of the Civil War 1861-1865." There is a date of 1904 chiseled between the plaque and the sculpture. On the back of the base is another bronze plaque which announces the Grand Army of the Republic was organized in this city April 6, 1866.
