Description
An account of the resource
Within the entrance hall to the Yale University Commons the walls are inscribed with the names of Yale graduates who lost their lives in American conflicts from the War of 1812 through Vietnam. The information includes their year of graduation as well as the action in which they lost their life. Most of the plaques and walls of names are dedicated by specific graduating classes from the university. There is one name John Bates Murdock who perished in the War of 1812. There are 2 names inscribed for the War with Mexico: Lyman Foot, M.D. and Frederick Davis Mills. There is an individual plaque for the Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection to honor Joseph Walport as well as one for Franklin Adam Meacham. One honors Horace Tracy Pitkin who died at his post during the Boxer Rebellion in China on July 1, 1900. He had graduated from the Yale Seminary in 1896 and served three years as a missionary in China. Several walls contain the names of those from Yale who served and died during the Civil War. There is also an inscription on the floor noting this memorial, however the etching is almost worn off and the floor is covered most of the time by a floor mat.
