Description
An account of the resource
In the Beaufort South Carolina National Cemetery are two flat granite tablets with bronze plaques. The Memorial recognizes the re-internment of Black Union soldiers of the 55th Infantry Regiment of Massachusetts. The soldiers had participated in the assault on Charleston in the winter of 1863-64 and lost their lives on Folly Island. The remains of at least 19 soldiers were discovered in 1987 and re-interred at the national cemetery with full military honors on Memorial Day 1989.
