Description
An account of the resource
This cemetery was begun after the war ended and comprised remains brought from nearby battlefields, many of them unknown. The Australian National Memorial was built within the cemetery site since so many Australians lost their lives in this area. Work has continued on identifying remains and burying them in cemeteries near where they fought. From this cemetery, one of the unknown Australian soldiers buried here was chosen for the Australian Tomb of the Unknown at the National Memorial in Canberra in 1993.

Description
An account of the resource
Located on “Hill 104” the Australian National Memorial was designed by the CWGC architect Edwin Lutyens. This was the last of the great British and Commonwealth memorials to be built in France and Belgium. This area was again the site of combat in World War II and the memorial suffered extensive damage most of which was repaired after the war. On the panels on each side of the main tower are inscribed the names of more than 11,000 Australians who have no known grave. One can climb the stairs in the tower for a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside that saw so much horrific fighting during World War I. Also the tower provides an excellent view of the small cemetery that sits in front of the memorial. In 1993, an unknown Australian soldier was exhumed from the cemetery at Villers-Bretonneux and given into the protection of an Australian honor guard here at the National Memorial. The Australian Unknown Soldier lay in rest here before beginning his journey home to the Australian Tomb of the Unknown in Canberra. He represents the 11,000 unknown Australians who died in World War I and the more than 100,000 Australians who gave their lives in the two World Wars.

Description
An account of the resource
This small stirring memorial honors the brave Australian forces who fought so diligently along this ridge line known for its windmill during the fighting along the Somme Front from July –September 1916. Eventually three Australian divisions were thrown into the fight and more than 7000 lost their lives here; this is the greatest loss of Australian lives in any fighting in the world. Large French and Australian flags flank the memorial site on which are a small bench inscribed with the description of the action that occurred here. A small bronze memorial also gives details of the numbers of Australian troops who served and became casualties along the Western Front – more than at Gallipoli; it is accompanied by a map of the Somme Front. The original windmill for which the site is named was destroyed early in the fighting as was all of the farmland that now appears so lush and green; mounds from the trenches and digging during the war are still visible.

Description
An account of the resource
On the small butte stands the majestic obelisk memorial for the Australian 5th Division who fought so valiantly to retake this area during the Battle of Third Ypres and particularly in the Battle of Polygon Woods in September 1917. This memorial and cemetery were constructed after the war was over and most of those buried here are unknown. The cemetery is beautiful with bright red roses that stand out in the small clearing as one peers down from the butte and the memorial which is one of five Australian divisional memorials in Europe. Beneath the butte is the Stone of Remembrance found in Commonwealth cemeteries. There are 2100 graves in this concentrated cemetery with 1700 unidentified. In the rear of the cemetery is the memorial to honor 378 New Zealanders whose final resting place is unknown. Architect Charles Holden.
The Australian Memorial obelisk is detailed with bronze plaques. At the top is the symbol of Australian Imperial Forces and then a plaque indicating it is dedicated to the men of the 5th Australian Division who fought in Europe 1916-1918 and lists the key battles in which they participated.
