On enters the site along a walkway lined with stones purchased to honor individual Rangers – there are no ranks on the stones just the term “Ranger” before the names. A dramatic entrance arch stands at the entry; the arch is composed of two large granite columns with the word “Ranger” as is seen on the uniform patch stretched across. On the left column is inscribed the Ranger creed and on the right column are the Standing Orders of Rogers Rangers as developed by the originator of the US Rangers, Robert Rogers, during the French and Indian War. At the end of the walkway and framed through the arch, is the focal point of the memorial site – a large Fairbairn-Sykes knife sculpture that stands on its point. The knife was standard issue to Army Rangers during World War II. There are also black marble markers that give the history of the Rangers, their units and the campaigns in which they participated as well as the names of those who were awarded the Medal of Honor. var str = 'Memorial Park alongside Route 9 in New Britain, Connecticut that contains a smaller replica memorial of the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, D.C. The memorial is constructed of polished black marble and engraved with quotes honoring those who served in the Battle of Iwo Jima as well as the names of those from Connecticut who lost their lives on the island. The memorial was built on the 50th anniversary of World War II in 1995 and sponsored by the Iwo Jima Survivors Association.
The memorial is 40 feet tall and the concrete base contains sand from the beaches of Iwo Jima. The statue on top of the large base depicts the famous flag-raising on Mt Suribachi. The front of the memorial lists those from the state who died in the fighting along with those who earned a Medal of Honor for their actions during the battle. On other portions are engraved images, quotes and a map of the island. The site also contains memorials to military chaplains and the Medical Corps and there is an eternal flame.
