This original working scale model used by Dr. Felix de Weldon to sculpt the famous Marine Corps World War II Memorial that is in Washington, DC was donated to the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen in 1981. The sculpture brings to life the famous photograph snapped by Joe Rosenthal of the second flag raising on Mount Surabachi on Iwo Jima during World War II. The Marine figures stand 32 feet tall and rise from a black granite base. The memorial honors all Marines who have given their lives in service of the US and is intended to inspire the young cadets at the Academy.
