This small red granite marker on the county courthouse grounds honors General August Buchel who commanded Confederate troops at Brownsville. Buchel had a colorful background having been raised in Prussian schools, fought with the French Foreign Legion , the Turkish Army and having been knighted in Spain. He commanded the 1st Texas Cavalry in 1863. After being transferred to Louisiana, he was killed at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, on April 9, 1864.
